Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

The pilgrimage is quickly coming to an end.  Tomorrow, Thursday, October 28th we return to the US.  Thanks to everyone for your prayers during this time.  In one way or another each one of us has been changed by this pilgrimage. Here is a slideshow of the trip.

Wednesday, October 27th - Papal Audience

This morning begins with the highlight of our Pilgrimage, attendance at a Papal Audience at the Vatican.  In the afternoon we will visit the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where we will celebrate Mass.

At 8am we celebrated Mass at the Tomb of Saint Peter.  It was a great privilege for us to have Cardinal Designate Raymond Burke as our main celebrant.  All the pilgrims were pleased to see him but most of all those from Saint Louis were so happy. Continue reading »

Tuesday, October 26

This morning we celebrate an early morning Mass at the Basilica of Saint Peter with Archbishop Raymond Burke as our main celebrant.  After Mass, we will tour in the interior of the Basilica.

We began our morning in the Chapel at the Notre Dame Center with Mass. Our long journey of the day began with a bus trip to Tel Aviv Airport.  At the airport, we made our goodbyes to Father David and our bus driver Levon.  Both gave us outstanding service throughout our time in the Holy Land. Monday, October 25

Today we depart the Notre Dame Center, for Rome. The Center has been our base for the past 6 days and we now look forward to having a change in our diet. While we all liked our Middle East diet we are looking forward to a plate of Italian Pasta.

October 24th Images

October 24th

This morning we had a late start and made our way to the Upper Room.  It is know operated by the Israeli Government Office of Tourism.  There were tuns of crowds and because today, eventhough it is a Sunday, was a work day there was lots of traffic in and around Jerusalem.

Sunday, October 24th

This morning we celebrate Mass in the Franciscan's Cenacle Chapel, which commemorates the Upper Room.  We will then visit the Dormition Abbey honoring the passage of Our Lady form this life to Heaven.  The rest of the day is free.

This morning we walked to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for an early morning Mass at the Tomb of Jesus. Archbishop Naumann and I arrived at the Holy Sepulchre about 5:30 am and our pilgrims shortly after. Continue reading »

October 22nd

This morning we made our way to the Church of Saint Anne to visit the birthplace of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  The church located in this place is a very simple but elegant church from the Crusader period, which makes it about 900 years old.  Located in the same area the Pools of Bethesda. These pools were large cisterns that collected water during the rainy season for the City of Jerusalem to use throughout the year. Continue reading »

This morning we enter the Old City of Jerusalem at Saint Stephen's Gate where our first stop is at the Church of Saint Anne and the Pool of Bethseda.  next we visit the Chapel of Flagellation in preparation for making the Way of the Cross.  We follow the Via Dolorosa to the Chruch of the Holy Sepulchre. October 21st

 

This morning we made our way to the Latin Patriarchate so that all of our pilgrims could receive their pilgrim shell.  Because of the Synod of Bishops on the Middle East the Latin Patriarch could not be present.  His representative gave all a great lesson in the work of the Patriarchate and the situation of Christians in the Holy Land. This morning we entered into the City of Bethlehem to celebrate Mass at the Church of Saint Catherine. This church is located next to the Church of the Nativity, but because this Church is Greek Orthodox we are unable to celebrate Mass there.  It was a wonderful experience. Continue reading »

Wednesday, October 20th

Traveling a short distance south of Jerusalem, we will enter through the Wall that separates Israel and the Palestinian territory.  We will arrive in Bethlehem to visit the Holy Grotto of the Nativity, the Manger and the Grotto of Saint Jerome.  We will celebrate Mass in the Franciscan church of Saint Catherine.  In the countryside close by we visit the Shepherds' Fields of boaz and remember the angels' glad tidings to the shepherds.   Continue reading »
